Munster Indiana Prepares for Invasion of Dark Lords

April 14, 2011 by · 1 Comment

3Floyds_Ale_by_Steve_CardwellCraft beer connoisseurs from across the Midwest will descend on Munster Indiana for Three Floyd’s Brewery annual event, Dark Lord Day. April 30th is the big day, when 6,000 ticket-holding attendees will sample micro-brews from Three Floyd’s as well as other brewers. The main component of the event is the rite-of-Spring tapping of their signature beer, Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout.  According to their web site, this recipe is specially prepared for the event and is only sold this one day.

Since all 6,000 tickets were sold in advance, you are encouraged to visit the pub during their regular business hours, and NOT during this year’s festivities. Since crowd control, parking, and counterfeit tickets had all been problems during previous festivals, Three Floyd’s has had to structure this years bash with more security and control systems in place.

To insure a good time, Three Floyds have posted the purpose is one of exchanging ideas, products, and recipes among home-brew hobbyists: “We allow people to bring limited amounts of beer for trading and sampling with other beer lovers. The idea is to celebrate craft beer not have a raging kegger. Please no kegs and be respectful of the event.”

For those not already familiar, the brew pub is adjacent to their rather large brewing facility located in a quiet industrial park near the Hammond Clinic and Centennial Park Golf Course, at Calumet Ave. and Superior. Generally speaking their brew recipes favor ale’s versus lagers, and contain more complex and tasty hops than domestic bottled beers.

Three Floyds Brings Cheer & Quality of Life Beyond Munster

Taps_At_3Floyds_by_Steve_CardwellA joint venture between Three Floyds and Indianapolis based micro-brewer Sun King Brewery has fended off a rivalry between two similar and competing products. Now the recipe has been standardized and will be produced in both Munster, Indiana  and in Indy under the “Three Kings Pale Ale” branding. But the regional expansion is not without growing pains. Local beer enthusiast reports:  “According to Indiana law, a brewer cannot operate a tasting room, brew pub, or self-distribute its product if it produces more than 20,000 barrels (approximately 40,000 kegs) a year. With 3 Floyds on pace to exceed 20,000 barrels this year, the brewery is faced with either shutting down its brewpub or it’s brewing operation or moving their entire enterprise to Illinois. Sun King is on pace to hit the 20,000 barrel limit in 2013, when it will either have to stopped self-distributing its product or curtail growth permanently.”

If you have ambition to become a regular at the Three Floyd’s Brew Pub, consider purchasing a nearby condo, town-home or residence in the Munster, Highland, Dyer, or Schererville community. This area makes up best of what Lake County Indiana has to offer: shopping, schools, transportation, things to do. And if you are buying or selling a home here, consult with a local expert (me of course) about your options.

  1. Know of several disappointed craft beer connoisseurs through out Northwest Indiana who did not get a ticket. All tickets actually sold out in less than 5 minutes.
